Providing quality instruction since 2005, Hensley's Bluegrass Music is the premier provider of Bluegrass Banjo instruction
in the Shenandoah Valley.
Learning in the Technology Age Today's
technology makes learning to play an instrument easier than ever. With the abundance of free online resources and commercial
instructional materials, the hardest part of learning an instrument today is sticking to a curriculum that keeps you learning,
while not being overwhelmed by just how much information is now available. The two primary benefits of having an personal
instructor are instant feedback & critique and a customized learning path tailored to your individual
needs.
Instant Feedback & Critique At HBM, we encourage the use
of every medium possible while learning to play an instrument: YouTube, Instructional DVDs, Free Online Lessons, Commercial
Instruction Books, etc... All of these sources can provide the detailed information needed to learn how to play.
Unfortunately, these sources still lack the ability respond to the individual student. The missing element in those
forms of media is the simple ability to answer specific questions that might arise, the ability to notice bad form and correct
it on the spot, before it becomes bad habit, and the oportunity to further explain the specific subject when it doesn't
quite make sense.
Custom Learning The amount of instructional material
(free and commercial) today is simply amazing. At HBM we are thrilled to see so much material, so easily available.
The only downside to the copious amounts of learning aides available today is that it is so easy to be overwhelmed by them.
"Where should I start?" "What should I move on to next?" "I don't feel like I'm progressing."
These are all questions and comments that we see and hear from students seeking instruction. We are happy to provide
a tailored curriculum for learning to play the instrument, with continued improvement.
Objective: To provide one-on-one instruction through repetitive and incremental lessons. Students will be challenged
to reach new "conclusions" on their own. This is the key difference between learning to play a song and learning
to play an instrument.
Students will succeed, if they practice!
Instructors
We have an experienced and dedicated group of teachers and administrators. Each teacher strives to create a supportive and
challenging classroom atmosphere to encourage students to participate. We may introduce a teacher on this page, or have a
teacher of the month feature like the one below.
Jeffrey A. Hensley

Jeff is both the owner and primary instructor at Hensley's Bluegrass Music. He began his musical career at
the age of five, when he started his first of nine consecutive years of piano lessons. In 1998, Jeff took up the 5-string
Bluegrass Banjo, and a couple years later began picking the guitar. He has been teaching privately since 2005 and continues
to pursue his own musical education.
Jeff plays full-time with Heartland, a bluegrass gospel group. He also
has performed with other local groups throughout his musical career and enjoys being a part of such a wonderful musical community.
